Our FTO Mexico Altura comes from the Sierra Madre del Sur coastal mountain range in the south of Oaxaca, grown at elevations of 1100-1700 meters. In lush tropical forests overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a community of small family farms are managed by indigenous coffee producers, almost forty percent of whom are women. While they design their own farm management techniques and manage every aspect of production, from harvesting to milling, these small farms do not possess the means on their own to carry out many of the necessary functions needed to bring their coffee to market.

In order to access the international coffee market and combat the poverty and marginalization of indigenous communities, several thousand small producers came together in 1989 to create an umbrella organization known as CEPCO (La Coordinadora Estatal de Productores de Café de Oaxaca). Now with more than 4000 producers from more than 130 communities in seven different regions, CEPCO is currently the largest association of small coffee producers in the state of Oaxaca and is comprised of more than 30 producer associations. As the majority of its producers are members of indigenous communities, one of the collective’s main priorities remains to strengthen and empower these communities through involvement in social justice work and grassroots democracy.
